How Many Words Are in a 5-Minute Speech?
Start with a realistic word budget, then time your own delivery with pauses included.
A five-minute speech contains 600–750 words at an assumed 120–150 words per minute. Treat that as a draft budget, then time yourself aloud. If the slot includes a demonstration, silence, or audience response, subtract that time before calculating the script length.

A useful starting range

Word budget = speaking minutes × words per minute. These are arithmetic scenarios, not measured average speaking rates.

Subtract the moments without words
If a demonstration takes 30 seconds and you plan 15 seconds of deliberate pauses, only 4.25 minutes remain for speech. At 130 words per minute, that is about 550 words.
A word counter measures the script, not slide transitions or laughter. Remove stage directions from the counted draft or remember they are included.
Rehearse, then cut
Read aloud at a comfortable pace and record the elapsed time. Practice with the actual transitions. If you are 40 seconds over, cut a secondary example rather than trying to rush every sentence.
Keep one main idea, a concrete example, and a clear ending. A short speech is easier to follow when the audience does not have to track several competing arguments.

Can I deliver 1,000 words in five minutes?
That would require 200 words per minute with no time left for pauses. Calculate it as 1,000 ÷ 5, then rehearse to see whether your audience can follow. Do not rely on the number alone.
How do I measure my speaking rate?
Count the spoken words in a rehearsal and divide by elapsed minutes. If you measure a full run including pauses, do not subtract those same pauses a second time when using that overall rate.
