Words use Unicode word segmentation. Sentences are estimated with English sentence boundaries; abbreviations can affect them. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Estimated reading time (minutes, rounded up): 0 at 200 words/minute.
Use word and paragraph counts to shape a draft. Sentence and reading-time figures are estimates, so check the rules of your assignment or publication.
What counts as a word?
The counter uses Unicode-aware word segmentation when the browser supports it. Punctuation-only segments are excluded. Hyphenated terms, apostrophes, and languages without spaces can produce different counts in other editors.
Reading time is an estimate at 200 words per minute. Speaking has a different pace: practice aloud and account for pauses. A word count cannot predict the timing of demonstrations or audience questions.
Count the text that belongs in the budget
Copy the relevant document text; this tool does not open Word or PDF files. Remove speaker notes, references, or headings only if your assignment excludes them. Plain text has no knowledge of those roles.
A destination may treat hyphenated expressions or footnotes differently. Compare the same selection in that destination before submitting. Copy or download your draft before refreshing; it is not saved between visits.
Example: words, sentences, and paragraphs
“One clear idea.” followed by a blank line and “Two short examples.” contains six words, two estimated sentences, and two paragraphs. A single line break within either paragraph does not start a new paragraph.
Sentence boundaries are estimated using English segmentation. Abbreviations, bullet fragments, and multilingual punctuation can change the result. Reading time divides the word count by 200 and rounds up to a whole minute for a nonempty draft.
