JPG vs PNG: What’s the Difference?
Choose a format based on the image: photographs, screenshots, sharp text, or transparency.
JPG is usually a practical choice for photographs with small file sizes. PNG preserves pixels losslessly and supports transparency, making it useful for screenshots, diagrams, and logos. Choose for the content and destination, not the extension alone.

Start with what is in the picture
A photograph contains gradual changes in color and texture. JPG can discard less noticeable information to make it smaller. A screenshot contains sharp text and flat color boundaries; those boundaries often look cleaner in a lossless PNG.
The best format is determined by what needs to survive. A slightly softer background may be acceptable in a holiday photo, while a blurry letter in a technical diagram can change its meaning.

A transparent logo needs special care
If a PNG logo has a transparent background, a JPG must replace that transparency with a color. Our PNG to JPG tool uses white. A logo intended for a dark page may therefore look wrong after conversion. Keep the transparent original.
JPG to PNG does not remove a background or restore lost detail. It makes a lossless container for the pixels you already have.
A simple decision process
For a photo, compare JPG and WebP at the size you will display. For a text-heavy screenshot, start with PNG. For transparency, use PNG or an appropriate WebP. Then check the destination accepts that format.
Open your exported file at its intended display size. Examine small text and high-contrast edges before optimizing for the lowest byte count.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNG always higher quality?
PNG is lossless, but converting a poor JPG to PNG preserves its existing artifacts too.
Are JPG and JPEG different formats?
No. .jpg and .jpeg are common extensions for the same image format. Renaming either one does not change the image or its file size.
